Super-De-Duper-Stops
One of the biggest improvements we'll see to our transit service on Columbia Pike over the next couple years is the installation of eight custom designed Super Stops transit shelters in our community. I've included a link to the presentation that was distributed to the public in December. Check it out - I think you'll be impressed.

If you want to know what features a Super Stop will have here's an excerpt from the web site:
"What are Super Stops?
Bigger, better, more comfortable and convenient bus stops to serve you and accommodate the increased numbers of buses and passengers, including:
Larger, architect-designed bus shelters with amenities
Electronic and printed information and maps for bus routes and areas
Wireless access to information such as cell, PDA, web “Hot Zone”
Ample seating, enhanced lighting and new security features
Improved landscape, sidewalks
Future accommodation of off-board fare payment"
Here's a map I generated of where the eight Super Stops would be in Columbia Heights/Penrose. Coming from the east stops would be at Scott St, Courthouse Rd, Barton St and Walter Reed Dr. Six out of eight of the stops would be located on the far side of intersections (expect that to eventually be seven)

Because of the narrow width of the sidewalk on the north side of Columbia Pike at Walter Reed Drive, that stop will only get iconic elements and not the canopy. Expect all other stops will get canopies. The Barton Street south side stop (near Rappahhanock Coffee) will probably be a Scheme B configuration (need to view presentation) brought up close to the curb. My hunch is all other stops will be scheme A's set back a ways from the curb.
I would look to see these Super Stops to start appearing in 2007 and hopefully we'll see the off-board fare payment option in 2008. BTW, signal prioritization has been running on Pike Ride since last Spring. The County is going to have Viriginia Tech do a study to see how much this has improved on-time performance.
